M365 E3 is the default plan for enterprise customers north of 300 seats. Unlimited Exchange Archiving: the primary mailbox holds 100 GB and the archive mailbox starts at 100 GB with auto-expanding growth — practical capacity is unlimited. For regulated industries (financial services, life sciences, legal) and for compliance regimes like SEC 17a-4, FINRA, SOX, HIPAA and GDPR retention obligations, this is mission-critical. Email evidence is preserved indefinitely without manual archive rotation. Litigation Hold and In-Place Hold features pin specific mailboxes to hold for legal review even when users attempt to delete content.

Information Protection P1: documents are classified, labeled and encrypted with Sensitivity Labels. Labels travel with the file: even if a Highly Confidential document is forwarded outside the organization, unauthorized recipients cannot decrypt it. Manual and automatic labeling are both supported, and the policies are managed centrally from the Purview Information Protection console. For GDPR, HIPAA and CCPA, this is a foundational technical control.

Defender XDR is not included: Defender for Endpoint P1, Defender for Office P1 and Defender for Identity are not part of E3. They sit in E5.
