Dell PowerEdge R760

2U dual-socket flagship rack server — the enterprise workhorse.

Quick answer

Dell PowerEdge R760 is the flagship 2U dual-socket rack server. It supports 4th and 5th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, up to 8 TB of DDR5 memory across 32 DIMM slots, 24 SFF NVMe or 12 EDSFF E3.S SSDs, PCIe Gen5 expansion and up to three double-slot GPUs. It is the default workload platform for enterprise virtualization, OLTP databases, VDI and AI inference workloads across EU, UK and US data centers.

Dell PowerEdge R760 is Dell's flagship 2U dual-socket rack server and the direct competitor to HPE's ProLiant DL380. It is the workhorse of the modern PowerEdge lineup — the platform that the largest share of enterprise virtualization, database, VDI and inference workloads run on. It supports both 4th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable (Sapphire Rapids) and 5th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable (Emerald Rapids) processors, 32 DDR5 DIMM slots reaching 8 TB of memory, 24 SFF NVMe SSDs or 12 EDSFF E3.S NVMe SSDs, PCIe Gen5 expansion across all primary slots, and up to three double-slot GPUs in the 2U chassis. For our EU, UK and US enterprise customers it is the default new-build platform for any general-purpose data-center workload.

Compute and memory subsystem. R760 supports two Intel Xeon Scalable 4th or 5th Gen processors. On the 5th Gen Emerald Rapids SKUs the platform supports up to 64 cores per socket with significantly improved per-core performance, larger L3 cache and lower per-instruction power than the 4th Gen Sapphire Rapids it replaces. With 32 DDR5 DIMM slots populated with 256 GB RDIMMs, the platform reaches 8 TB of memory per server — more than double the upper bound of the previous-generation R750. Eight DDR5 memory channels per socket sustain over 600 GB/s of aggregate memory bandwidth, a critical specification for in-memory databases such as Microsoft SQL Server in-memory tables, Oracle Database In-Memory, SAP HANA scale-up nodes (where the R860 4-socket platform is also a candidate) and very large Redis Enterprise deployments. The platform supports Compute Express Link (CXL) memory expansion through PCIe Gen5, opening future memory-pooling architectures across multiple servers — an emerging design pattern for memory-bound workloads where the per-host memory budget cannot grow further by adding DIMMs.

Storage flexibility. R760 exposes three primary backplane options. The first is 24 SFF (2.5-inch) drive bays supporting SAS, SATA and NVMe in any mix — the highest drive count in the 2U PowerEdge family and the preferred choice for storage-rich workloads such as Microsoft SQL Server tempdb, Oracle Database, large vSAN nodes and software-defined storage clusters. The second is 12 EDSFF E3.S NVMe SSDs — Dell's new high-density NVMe form factor that replaces 2.5-inch U.2 in the latest backplane revisions. EDSFF E3.S delivers approximately 30 percent higher IOPS density than U.2, hot-swap from the front bezel, substantially better thermal characteristics and a longer device lifetime; leading hyperscalers have standardized on the form factor and the enterprise tier is following. The third is the LFF (3.5-inch) backplane for capacity-bound NAS, archive, backup target and large-disk software-defined storage roles. All three backplanes are paired with the Dell PowerEdge RAID Controller (PERC 12 H965i or H965e for tri-mode SAS/SATA/NVMe with hardware RAID 0/1/5/6/10/50/60) and optional Flash Backed Cache for write-intensive workloads.

Accelerator and GPU support. R760 supports up to three double-slot GPUs in a single 2U chassis — NVIDIA L40S for inference and graphics, NVIDIA H100 NVL for transformer inference (with 94 GB of HBM3 per card and NVLink across pairs), NVIDIA A100 for legacy training and inference, plus Intel Gaudi 3 and selected AMD Instinct accelerators on specific configurations. With PCIe Gen5 x16 lanes per GPU slot the platform delivers full bandwidth to large-language-model inference workloads, retrieval-augmented-generation (RAG) pipelines, computer-vision serving, scientific computing and rendering. For dense training clusters where eight GPUs per node are required with NVLink and NVSwitch interconnect, the dedicated PowerEdge XE9680 (also part of the Dell PowerEdge family — see below) in a 6U form factor is the recommended platform. For very dense inference deployments, two to three NVIDIA L40S cards per R760 deliver excellent inference throughput at reasonable cost — a popular configuration for enterprise AI co-pilot and RAG deployments across our customer base.

iDRAC 9 management. Dell integrated Dell Remote Access Controller 9 is the embedded baseboard management controller (BMC) on every PowerEdge R760. It provides KVM-over-IP for full graphical remote console, virtual media (mount ISO files from the management workstation), full sensor telemetry (temperature, power draw, fan speed, voltage, current), BIOS and firmware management, comprehensive event logging and a hardware security stack that includes Silicon-based Root of Trust (immutable hardware-based attestation), System Lockdown Mode (prevents unauthorized BIOS or firmware modification) and Secured Component Verification for supply-chain integrity attestation. The iDRAC 9 Enterprise license adds Group Manager (federated management of dozens of iDRACs from a single browser session), video record-and-playback for post-incident analysis, rich integrations with VMware vCenter, Microsoft System Center, Red Hat Satellite, Red Hat Ansible and ServiceNow, and the SupportAssist remote telemetry feed for predictive analytics. The iDRAC 9 Datacenter license adds telemetry streaming, advanced thermal management, automated certificate enrollment and the most comprehensive RESTful Server Configuration Profile API for infrastructure-as-code workflows. For US federal customers and EU regulated industries, iDRAC 9 includes FIPS 140-2 and FIPS 140-3 validated cryptographic modes and supports the CNSA Suite 2.0 algorithm set required by Department of Defense procurement. The integrated TPM 2.0 chip provides hardware-backed key storage and measured-boot attestation suitable for Windows Server VBS (Virtualization-Based Security) and credential guard scenarios.

OpenManage Enterprise lifecycle management. Where iDRAC manages a single server, OpenManage Enterprise orchestrates fleets. Template-based provisioning lets operators define a golden configuration once and apply it to a hundred R760s simultaneously — BIOS settings, firmware levels, RAID layouts, network MAC pool allocation, boot ordering, secure-boot policy, OS deployment and post-install configuration are all driven from a single declarative profile. OpenManage Enterprise also provides full firmware compliance reporting, generating the documentation trail that simplifies audits against SOC 2 Common Criteria, ISO 27001 Annex A, NIST 800-53 controls SC-12 (cryptographic key establishment) and SI-7 (software, firmware and information integrity), PCI DSS requirement 6 (develop and maintain secure systems) and HIPAA technical safeguards. For VMware environments the OpenManage Integration for VMware vCenter plug-in surfaces hardware health, firmware compliance and lifecycle operations directly inside the vSphere Client. For organizations standardized on Ansible or Terraform, the Dell PowerEdge Ansible collection and the OpenManage Terraform provider deliver full infrastructure-as-code workflows. The OpenManage Mobile application provides on-the-go fleet monitoring with biometric authentication for field engineers.

Workload fit and TCO. R760 is the default choice for general-purpose enterprise compute. For VMware vSphere and VMware Cloud Foundation clusters, the platform delivers an excellent balance of cores, memory capacity and storage IOPS — and with Broadcom's per-core VMware Cloud Foundation licensing model, careful CPU SKU selection lets operators tune the cost-per-VM curve precisely. For Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle Database deployments, the 8 TB memory ceiling enables substantial buffer-pool sizing that often eliminates the need for a separate flash array; for Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), R760 paired with InfiniBand or 100 GbE RDMA interconnect delivers excellent throughput. For Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops and VMware Horizon VDI environments, the three GPU slots support NVIDIA vGPU profiles for GPU-accelerated desktops at densities of 100-200 power users per host. For Red Hat OpenShift, Kubernetes, EKS Anywhere and other container platforms, the high core count and PCIe Gen5 networking deliver excellent pod density and pod-to-pod latency. A typical R760 hosts 50-150 virtual machines in a balanced general-purpose VMware cluster, with the median deployment in our customer base sitting around 80 VMs per host.

Sustainability and power efficiency. R760 introduces meaningful power-efficiency improvements over the previous-generation R750. The 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable platform delivers approximately 20-30 percent higher performance per watt on typical virtualization and database workloads; the new high-efficiency Titanium-class power supplies (96 percent efficient at 50 percent load) reduce data-center energy consumption further; and the redesigned airflow path supports higher inlet temperatures (up to 35 degrees Celsius), allowing operators to raise the data-center setpoint and reduce cooling overhead. For organizations tracking ESG metrics under the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the UK Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) or California SB 253, these efficiency improvements translate directly to Scope 2 emissions reductions. Dell also publishes per-SKU product carbon footprint disclosures (PCF reports) under the EPEAT registry to support customer Scope 3 reporting.

Sora Yazilim engagement model. We deliver R760 as a turnkey engagement for our EU, UK and US enterprise customers. The engagement begins with workload sizing — we run Dell's official sizing tools against the projected workload mix and combine the output with our own VM-density modeling, IOPS calculation, network bandwidth analysis and accelerator-requirements assessment. From there we develop a co-engineered bill of materials with the right CPU SKU (core count, frequency, cache and AVX-512 considerations), memory configuration (capacity versus bandwidth optimization), storage layout (EDSFF NVMe versus 24 SFF), accelerator selection (if required) and network adapter choice (OCP 3.0 25 GbE or 100 GbE, or InfiniBand HDR/NDR). OEM-grade rack-and-stack installation includes physical mounting, structured power and network cabling, iDRAC and OpenManage baseline configuration, BIOS hardening per CIS Benchmark and NIST 800-53 SI-7 guidance, System Lockdown firmware-compliance lock and a complete asset-tracking and handover dossier. For VMware vSphere, Proxmox VE, Microsoft Hyper-V and Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Ubuntu installations we deliver the platform fully provisioned and ready to host workloads on day one. ProSupport Plus 24/7 with 4-hour onsite response is co-quoted on every proposal, and warranty renewals are tracked 90 days before expiry to avoid coverage gaps. For multi-server orders we coordinate staged delivery, regional logistics and on-site installation timelines with the customer's project schedule.

Compliance and regulatory posture. For regulated industries — financial services, healthcare, government, defense, energy and telecommunications — R760 supports the full cryptographic compliance baseline required by EU, UK and US enterprise customers. FIPS 140-2 and FIPS 140-3 validated cryptographic modes are available via iDRAC 9 and TPM 2.0; secure boot with measured-boot attestation provides hardware-anchored chain-of-trust; complete audit-log retention satisfies NIST 800-53 AU-2 and AU-12 controls; and the Silicon-based Root of Trust plus Secured Component Verification provide supply-chain integrity attestation aligned with NIST 800-161 (supply chain risk management). For our US federal customers we deliver against the DISA STIG (Security Technical Implementation Guide), FedRAMP-aligned baselines, NIST 800-53 moderate and high baselines, and CMMC (Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification) level 2 and 3 requirements. For EU customers, the platform supports the NIS2 directive technical and organizational measures, the EU AI Act infrastructure attestation requirements where applicable and the GDPR Article 32 (security of processing) requirements. For UK customers, Cyber Essentials Plus alignment is delivered. Industry-specific compliance includes PCI DSS, HIPAA HITECH, SOX IT general controls, FDA 21 CFR Part 11 and the ISO 27001 / ISO 27017 / ISO 27018 control families. Sora Yazilim delivers the compliance baseline documentation, the configuration evidence packs and the audit-readiness reports required by both internal audit and external assessors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions

How does PowerEdge R760 differ from the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen12?
Hardware performance is essentially identical on equivalent silicon — both platforms support 4th/5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable (and the next-generation Xeon 6 on the latest DL380 revision), DDR5 memory and PCIe Gen5 expansion. The deciding factors are management experience (Dell iDRAC 9 + OpenManage versus HPE iLO 6 + OneView), existing fleet standards and price. Price delta is typically within 5-10 percent for equivalent configurations.
How meaningful is the upgrade from R750 to R760?
Significant. R760 introduces PCIe Gen5, DDR5 memory and 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable (Emerald Rapids), delivering a 20-30 percent performance uplift on typical virtualization and database workloads and a 15-20 percent improvement in performance per watt. For VMware environments under Broadcom's per-core VCF licensing, careful 5th Gen CPU SKU selection improves cost-per-VM economics meaningfully. R750 is no longer in active production; new builds standardize on R760.
Can R760 really be configured with 8 TB of memory?
Yes — 32 DIMM slots populated with 256 GB DDR5 RDIMMs reach 8 TB. The configuration is expensive and uncommon at general-purpose workloads, where most customers start at 1-2 TB. The 8 TB ceiling is most often required for SAP HANA scale-up (where the 4-socket R860 is also a candidate), large in-memory analytical engines and very large Redis Enterprise deployments.
What is the GPU configuration limit?
Up to three double-slot GPUs in the 2U chassis — NVIDIA L40S, H100 NVL, A100 and selected AMD Instinct accelerators are supported. For dense training clusters where eight GPUs per node are required with NVLink and NVSwitch interconnect, the recommended platform is the dedicated PowerEdge XE9680 in a 6U form factor.
What does the iDRAC 9 Enterprise license add?
Standard iDRAC 9 Express covers baseline remote management — power control, sensor telemetry, basic remote console and event logging. Enterprise adds KVM-over-IP for full graphical remote console, virtual media (mount ISO files from the management workstation), Group Manager for fleet operations, video record-and-playback for post-incident review and the rich integrations with vCenter, System Center and ServiceNow. Enterprise is strongly recommended for any production deployment. Datacenter adds telemetry streaming, advanced thermal management and the most comprehensive RESTful API surface.
What does ProSupport Plus include?
ProSupport Plus includes 24/7 onsite response with a 4-hour SLA, AI-driven SupportAssist predictive analytics, proactive recommendations, direct access to senior engineers and an assigned Service Account Manager. It is the recommended support tier for any production-critical workload and is co-quoted on every Sora Yazilim proposal.
How many virtual machines does R760 host?
Workload-dependent, but the typical balanced general-purpose VMware cluster sees 50-150 VMs per R760, with the median in our customer base around 80 VMs per host. Database-heavy workloads sit lower; web-tier and microservices workloads sit higher.
Is R760 FIPS 140-2 and FIPS 140-3 compliant?
Yes. iDRAC 9 provides FIPS 140-2 and FIPS 140-3 validated cryptographic modes; TPM 2.0 and Silicon-based Root of Trust provide hardware-backed attestation. The platform meets the cryptographic requirements of NIST 800-53, US federal procurement (FedRAMP-aligned environments), the UK Cyber Essentials Plus baseline and the EU NIS2 directive.
Is there a successor with Intel Xeon 6 support?
R760 covers Intel Xeon Scalable 4th and 5th Gen. The next-generation PowerEdge R770 introduces support for the Intel Xeon 6 family (E-core Sierra Forest and P-core Granite Rapids variants) with even higher core density and improved performance per watt. Sora Yazilim presents both options when customers request a forward-looking platform evaluation.
What is the typical lead time and where do I source from in the EU, UK and US?
Standard R760 configurations ship from Dell regional logistics in 2-4 weeks for the EU and UK and 1-3 weeks for the US. Highly configured AI-inference variants with GPUs can extend to 8-12 weeks during periods of accelerator constraint. Sora Yazilim places orders in advance against committed pipeline to minimize lead-time risk for our enterprise customers.
