FortiCare Premium vs Elite: Differences Between Support Tiers
FortiCare Elite and FortiCare Premium are the two upper tiers of Fortinet's per-device technical support contracts. Premium provides 24x7 support, a one-hour response target for critical issues and standard RMA; Elite adds, in Fortinet's own definition, a 15-minute priority response, single-touch case handling, a proactive monitoring portal and access to Long-Term Supported (LTS) FortiOS releases.
What is FortiCare and how does it differ from FortiGuard?
FortiCare is Fortinet's per-device service contract covering technical support, replacement of failed hardware (RMA) and access to FortiOS firmware updates. FortiGuard is the threat-intelligence subscription that feeds security services such as IPS, antivirus and web filtering. One keeps the device running; the other keeps it effective against current threats.
The distinction is frequently blurred in practice. When a FortiGate is purchased, two separate layers sit on top of the hardware. The FortiCare layer answers the question "who do we call if the device fails, the firmware misbehaves or we get stuck on a configuration." The FortiGuard layer answers "does the device recognize the newest ransomware variant, does it block a malicious domain." If FortiGuard lapses, the device keeps routing, translating addresses and terminating VPNs, but signature updates stop. If FortiCare lapses, security services keep working, but support tickets, RMA and firmware access are closed.
Fortinet's FortiGuard bundle datasheets state that the UTP, ATP and Enterprise security bundles include FortiCare Premium. In most SMB deployments, therefore, Premium is already part of the bundle, while Elite is purchased as a separate contract or bundle upgrade. We covered the security-service differences between the bundles in our FortiGuard UTP, ATP and Enterprise bundle comparison, and the renewal logic of the two contracts in FortiCare versus FortiGuard renewal differences.
Essential, Premium and Elite: comparison table
FortiCare support tiers come in three levels: Essential is a base-level, web-only, next-business-day service offered only on entry-level models; Premium delivers 24x7 phone and portal support with standard RMA; Elite is designed for business-critical devices with the fastest response targets, proactive monitoring and LTS release access.
The table below summarizes the definitions Fortinet publishes in its FortiCare Technical Support and RMA Services and FortiCare Elite solution briefs. Response times are Fortinet's target values; contract terms and regional logistics can vary, so we recommend verifying the current document before purchase.
| Criterion | FortiCare Essential | FortiCare Premium | FortiCare Elite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eligible devices | FortiGate 9x and below, entry-level FortiWiFi | All FortiGate models and the Fortinet product family | FortiGate and selected Fortinet products |
| Support channel | Web portal tickets only | Phone and web portal, 24x7x365 | Phone and web portal, 24x7x365, expert team |
| Critical case response target | Next business day | One hour | 15 minutes for P1/P2 |
| Non-critical case response target | Next business day | Next business day | Two hours for P3/P4 |
| Hardware replacement (RMA) | Standard RMA, no advance shipment | Advance replacement, next-business-day delivery target | Advance replacement, next-business-day delivery target |
| Priority RMA add-on available | No | Yes | Yes |
| Case handling | Standard queue | Standard queue | Single-touch, expert team |
| Proactive monitoring portal | No | No | FortiCare Elite portal (FortiGate platforms) |
| LTS FortiOS access | No | No | Yes, 18 months extended engineering support |
| Firmware updates | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Three things stand out. First, Essential exists only on desktop-class devices; for a 100F or larger unit the options begin at Premium. Second, RMA delivery speed does not change between Premium and Elite; the difference lies in response time, case handling and software life cycle. Third, the LTS access that Elite provides exists at no other tier, and for devices with a long depreciation plan it can be the deciding factor on its own.
What does FortiCare Premium include?
FortiCare Premium, as defined by Fortinet, provides 24x7x365 technical support, a one-hour response target for critical issues and next business day for non-critical ones, access to FortiOS firmware updates, and advance replacement RMA in which the new unit ships before the failed one is returned.
Premium is the tier that suits the large majority of small and mid-sized organizations. In our field experience, offices running a single FortiGate, concentrated during business hours and able to tolerate a short outage get a balanced scope from Premium in both support access and hardware assurance. The definition of a critical case matters here: Fortinet classifies cases by priority level, and the one-hour target applies only to production-down cases; configuration questions and performance tuning requests fall into the next-business-day category.
Knowing what Premium does not cover is equally important. Premium does not configure the device for you, does not audit your rule base and does not monitor the device proactively; those belong to Fortinet's separately offered professional services or to a solution partner's managed service. In our projects we stress that FortiCare is the right to reach the vendor, while day-to-day operation is run by the in-house team or a managed service provider. How these two layers work together is explained in our FortiGate technical support article.
What sets FortiCare Elite apart from Premium?
FortiCare Elite includes everything in Premium and adds, per Fortinet's definition, a 15-minute response target for P1 and P2 cases and two hours for P3 and P4, single-touch case handling by an expert team, the FortiCare Elite portal with device health insights and security posture recommendations, and LTS release access through 18 months of extended end-of-engineering support.
The value of Elite becomes concrete under four headings. First, response speed: in a production-down case the gap between one hour and 15 minutes translates directly into downtime cost for a manufacturing line, a hospital information system or a payment platform. Second, single-touch case handling: Fortinet states that Elite cases are owned by an expert team and resolved without being passed between tiers, which removes the burden of re-explaining case history in complex SD-WAN or HA scenarios. Third, proactive monitoring: the FortiCare Elite portal offers device health insights and security posture recommendations on FortiGate platforms. Fourth, software life cycle: LTS access is unlocked only with Elite and is covered in a separate section below.
Let us also be clear about what Elite is not. Elite does not dispatch engineers to your site, does not manage the device on your behalf and does not shorten RMA delivery time. If delivery speed is required, Priority RMA is added separately. The annual cost difference of Elite depends on the model class and contract term; we discuss those variables in our article on the factors that determine FortiGate pricing. At Sora Yazılım we present both tiers side by side for the same device and term at the quotation stage, and we make the decision together based on a downtime cost calculation.
When is RMA or Priority RMA needed?
Priority RMA is an accelerated hardware replacement service added to a FortiCare Premium or Elite contract for locations where the standard next-business-day delivery target is not enough. According to Fortinet, it has three levels: next-calendar-day delivery, four-hour on-site delivery, and four-hour on-site delivery with an engineer.
Understanding how standard RMA works determines whether Priority RMA is genuinely needed. Under Premium and Elite, Fortinet ships the replacement without waiting for the return of the failed unit and makes "commercially reasonable efforts" to deliver it on the next business day. That wording is a target, not a guarantee; weekends, public holidays and customs procedures can extend the time. Whether each Priority RMA tier is offered in a given country and city should also be checked against Fortinet's global service availability list. There are two ways to remove this uncertainty on the delivery side: a Priority RMA contract or a spare device.
Two rules stand out from our field experience. First, in a FortiGate cluster built as an HA pair the second unit takes over immediately, so the four-hour tier of Priority RMA is unnecessary for most organizations; next-calendar-day delivery is sufficient. Second, at branch, clinic or factory sites that run on a single device but cannot tolerate an outage, Priority RMA can be more economical than buying a second unit and building HA. Which route is better depends on the device model, the number of sites and the cost of downtime. Fortinet's Priority RMA solution brief formally defines these tiers and prerequisites; see the Fortinet FortiCare Priority RMA document for details.
LTS release access and the FortiOS life cycle
Access to LTS FortiOS releases is the most tangible privilege of FortiCare Elite that Premium lacks. Under Fortinet's product life cycle policy, a standard FortiOS release receives 36 months of engineering support from general availability followed by 18 months of "Must Fix" support; for Long-Term Supported releases the total extends to 72 months, including an 18-month Urgent Fix phase.
This difference is decisive in regulated sectors. In banking, healthcare and manufacturing environments, changing the major release of a firewall requires change management, a test window, a compliance review and sometimes third-party integration validation. Settling into a 72-month window instead of jumping releases every 36 months reduces both operational load and change-related outage risk. Fortinet's FortiCare Elite solution brief refers to this scope as "18 months of Extended End-of-Engineering-Support"; the document is available as the Fortinet FortiCare Elite solution brief.
Two points deserve attention in practice. First, which releases are designated LTS is announced by Fortinet per release and can be revised over time; for a new deployment we choose the release by checking Fortinet's current life cycle record. Second, an Elite contract is per device: some devices in the fleet can be on Elite and others on Premium, but because members of the same HA cluster must run the same FortiOS release, in our projects we recommend keeping their support tier aligned as well. The license and contract renewal steps are described in our guide to FortiGate license renewal steps and activation.
Which tier fits which organization?
Choosing a FortiCare tier comes down to three questions: does the business stop when the device stops, is there an in-house team with FortiOS knowledge, and how many years will the device stay in service? Business-critical, single-device and long-lived deployments lean toward Elite; standard offices and HA-protected sites lean toward Premium.
The decision table below is a simplified version of the assessment framework we use in our projects. Read it as a summary of the questions we ask during a discovery call rather than as a prescription.
| Scenario | Recommended tier | Add-on | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single FortiGate, office of 5 to 50 users, business-hours operation | Premium (included with the FortiGuard bundle) | Not required | One-hour critical response and next-business-day RMA are sufficient for most offices |
| Entry-level model, very small office or home office | Essential or Premium | Configuration backup | Essential exists only on 9x and below; if phone support is needed, move up to Premium |
| Head office protected by an HA pair | Premium | Priority RMA, next calendar day | The second unit takes over, so fast spare delivery matters more than a 15-minute response |
| Single-device clinic, factory or branch that accepts no outage | Elite | Priority RMA, four-hour on-site | Response speed and hardware delivery together determine downtime |
| Regulated organization, depreciation plan of 5 years or more | Elite | Managed service | LTS access reduces release change frequency and compliance audit load |
| Multi-branch estate with FortiManager or FortiAnalyzer at the center | Elite at the center, Premium at branches | Priority RMA at selected branches | Central devices are business-critical; branches can be protected by HA or SD-WAN |
For organizations without in-house FortiOS expertise we evaluate the tier from one more angle: a 15-minute response creates no value on its own if nobody is available to open the case and talk to a Fortinet engineer at a technical level. In that situation Premium combined with a managed firewall service is often a more effective combination than moving to Elite, because the party that opens the case, collects logs and applies the fix is the solution partner. The full list of supported models and technical specifications is on our FortiGate product page, and the complete portfolio on our Fortinet solutions page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the core difference between FortiCare Premium and Elite?
Premium provides 24x7 support, a one-hour response for critical cases and standard RMA. Elite adds a 15-minute P1/P2 response target, single-touch expert case handling, a proactive monitoring portal and access to LTS FortiOS releases. RMA delivery speed is the same at both tiers.
Does FortiCare Elite speed up RMA delivery?
No. Premium and Elite share the same standard RMA scope: advance shipment and a next-business-day delivery target. Faster delivery requires the Priority RMA add-on, which can only be attached to devices covered by a Premium or Elite contract.
Can I access LTS FortiOS releases with Premium?
No. According to Fortinet, Long-Term Supported releases and the 18 months of extended engineering support are unlocked only by a FortiCare Elite contract. A Premium contract provides firmware updates for standard releases, which receive 36 months of engineering support plus 18 months of Must Fix support.
Which devices are eligible for FortiCare Essential?
Fortinet offers the Essential tier only for FortiGate models 9x and below and entry-level FortiWiFi devices. Support is obtained solely by opening web tickets through the portal, and the response target for every case, critical or not, is next business day. Priority RMA cannot be added to this tier.
If I buy a FortiGuard bundle, do I still need FortiCare?
According to Fortinet's FortiGuard bundle datasheets, the UTP, ATP and Enterprise bundles include FortiCare Premium, so a separate Premium purchase is not needed. If the Elite tier is required, a bundle upgrade or a separate Elite contract is necessary. Verifying the scope by part number before ordering is the safest approach.
Does the device keep working when the FortiCare contract expires?
Yes. Expiry of FortiCare does not stop routing, NAT, VPN or the existing security profiles. However, the right to open support tickets, RMA and access to new firmware releases are closed. Because the FortiGuard subscription is separate, signature updates continue until their own expiry date.
Conclusion
The difference between FortiCare Premium and Elite is not a ranking of good versus better but a design decision driven by downtime cost and life cycle planning. Premium comes with the FortiGuard bundles and is sufficient for most office-scale deployments. Elite makes sense for organizations where minutes matter in a production-down case, where a single device carries the site, or where long release stability is required. Because RMA delivery speed is the same at both tiers, the hardware-side risk must be addressed separately through Priority RMA or an HA design.
